The United Nations Human Rights Council

Although not a member of the Council this year, Sweden takes active part in all meetings individually and as an active member of the European Union.

Challenges ahead for the Council include elaborating a new Universal Periodic Review system for the Council and reviewing parts of the system of the old Human Rights Commission such as its system of special procedures, its complaints procedure and its organ for expert advice.

In all these processes Sweden is looking to find solutions that are result-oriented and that will make the Council an effective and operational part of the UN Human rights system. The aim is to create a well-functioning Council that will have an effect on the ground in terms of improving the human rights-situation of people around the world.
