The Swedish Government's human rights website

‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.’ These are the opening words of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For the Swedish Government, the task of strengthening and promoting human rights and respect for them, both nationally and internationally, has high priority.

The Government has commissioned a Swedish action plan for human rights to be implemented over a four-year period (2006–2010). The action plan stresses the importance of disseminating information about human rights in order to generate increased awareness about human rights issues.

The Government's human rights website opened in May 2002. It is an important tool in the Government's efforts to disseminate knowledge about human rights and to inform the public of Swedish undertakings in this area.

The website is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Integration and Gender Equality and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

We hope that this website will be useful to anyone who is looking for facts and anyone who wants to know what the Swedish government is doing and why. We hope, too, that the website can serve as a source of inspiration to all of you who want to help play a part in safeguarding human rights in Sweden and in the rest of the world.

We would be very pleased to receive your comments or questions about the website.
